a taste of home

pasties: the best food in the universe.

[okay, universe may be an exaggeration.  world, most definitely.]

on our way home from a trip, we stopped in my hometown to buy a few bites of heaven.  all i can say is ahhh.

prayer

Father in heaven,
I humbly come before you with the prayer requests of my friends and myself. You know the desires we hold in our hearts. I am praying in agreement with them, and know that you will fulfill our hopes more abundantly than we can imagine when the time is right. Help us to seek you as we wait patiently and give us contentment in the day-to-day. You are generous with your mercy and I am in awe of your miraculous glory. Thank you for hearing me.
Amen.

new food experiences

pf chang's sponsored the half marathon.  i've never eaten there before.  they gave us a free appetizer, a $10 gift certificate and a free dessert for participating in the race.  it was delicious.
wonton soup
tuna tartare
dessert options
we also ate at joe's farm grill, which has been feature on 'diners, drive ins and dives'.  it was a cute place.
beet salad with blue cheese and walnuts
barbeque chicken pizza with bacon

i am not sore

so... compression socks... let's talk about the pink elephant in the room.  by pink elephant in the room, i mean pink compression socks on my feet.  they are pink, they are tight, they go from my toes to my knees.  i don't know how compression socks work.  i don't even know if they really work.  but i feel great.  like i could run a half marathon or something.  (ha! i crack myself up!)

maybe i feel great because i am stronger (RAWR!).  or maybe i feel great because of the change in elevation (mile high to sea level, yo).  or maybe it is the compression socks.  whatever, i'll take it.  and look cute in pink too.

do you know what goes really well with hot pink compression socks?  white capris and a red tank top.  i look like a baseball player reject.  :)

funny story about buying my new sexy socks.  the sales person asked t her shoe size (a 9) and told her she was a medium, then asked me my size (a 7) and asked to see my calves.  to which he immediately replied 'oh boy, you're a medium too'.  i think the 'oh boy' was a compliment on my muscular sexiness, don't you?  either that, or he was saying i have calves as big as an elephant.  let's go with the first one.

*do you know what makes compression socks work to reduce muscle soreness?

phoenix rock and roll half update

after getting off the plane, t and i went to the expo.  i normally don't go to these, so it was fun to browse the booths.  i bought a '13.1' car decal and we both bought compression socks.  since t is such a great runner, i decided to copy whatever she did.  (maybe it will rub off on me.) if she bought something, i bought something; if she ate something, i ate something; if she salted something, i salted something.  just call me mini-t.  the copycat.  it's cool to have a nickname, ya know.  *ahem*  that you give yourself. *ahem*
the morning of the race came early.  the boys had given me some items to run with for 'good luck' so i took a picture with them before starting - a very stylish headband and bracelets*.  i am pretty, oh so pretty, i am pretty and witty and...  i ate a protein bagel and we hopped on the public tram to get to the start line.  *hey, do not get distracted by the beautiful bling; there is shinyness (yes, that is a word i made up because i'm cool like that) at the end of the post to admire.
t had a few friends from work that were also running the race and i had a friend who was doing the 5 mile course.  after exchanging some humorous texts ['where are you?'  'i don't know.  where are you?'  'i'm in the middle of a crowd.  where are you?'], we finally met up.
t started in a faster corral than i did; she was in 4 and i was in 18.  we both signed up for the text alert that allowed us to follow the others progress.  super cool!  t hit the 5k mark before i even started the course!  i started out the race with a and her sister.  we walked the first 3 miles together before the courses split.  after that, i ran/walked.  i passed the 3 hour pacer!  huge deal for super slow me!
the course was pretty flat.  it was a very warm day.  the scenery was really different with palm trees and cactus.  there were lots of signs and bands along the way.  t finished the half right when i was passing the 10k mark.  i will not talk about how jealous i am of her mad running skillz.  no i will not.
instead i will tell you about gu.  i used the gu that was provided along the way.  BIG MISTAKE!  my belly does not like gu at all.  i've used gu two times and both times i've had intestinal issues.  i hit the bathroom two times before the end of the race and the 3 hour pacer passed me during the second one.  boo, not cool.  i finished in 3:03.  t teased me that i could have probably finished in under 3 hours if i hadn't stopped to take so many pictures (i took about 45ish).  i think she is probably right.  :)  still, pictures are cool.  cooler than tummy trouble.
here is my pretty medal.  it is very heavy.  i think i am going to sleep with it for several weeks because i am cool.  my sixth half marathon medal.  how cool am i?  very cool.  this medal proves it.  do you think i said 'cool' enough during this race recap?  just in case, i better say it a couple more times. i'm cool for running, you're cool for reading.  cool, cool, cool.  which the weather was not, by the way.  cool, i mean.
and that was the phoenix rock and roll half marathon.  the end.  cool.

packing

packing for my first real run out-of-state.  (runs in states where i stayed with family don't count.)  i hope i remembered everything.  :)  i have to admit, i'm nervous!

timing trial

in the phoenix half, you will get swept if you are slower than an 18 minute mile.  i know i sometimes walk slower than that, so i went for a 7 mile walk last night.  whew!  i averaged 16:58 minute miles.  no sweeper for me!

paninis!

i got a panini maker for christmas.  i don't know what it is about paninis, but they make an ordinary sandwich into something extraordinary.

50 states

i am really serious about running in all 50 states.  i think it is a goal that i can complete in 13 years if i hit 4 states a year.  wow!  me, running for the next 13 years!  how old will i be when i am done?  wait, let's not go there.  in 2012, i hit colorado, south dakota and wyoming. if i just did 3 states a year, it would take 17 years.

i am totally inviting myself over to all my high school and college friends' houses for the next several years.  since i have momentum (and permission), i have 6 states planned out for the next couple years.
arizona, california, new york, wyoming, washington and nevada in 2013.
texas, california, nebraska, illinois, washington and virginia in 2014.
ohio, oklahoma, oregon, florida, idaho and hawaii in 2015.
arizona, tennessee, south dakota, iowa, missouri and minnesota in 2016.
(yes, i know there are some repeats but i am not going to turn down any opportunity to stay with a friend.)  i am sure it will slow down after i have exhausted the friends-and-relatives connections.

anybody up for a road trip?  :)

who does these things? i do.

i want to do a race in all 50 states before i die.

knowing this, my friend t invited me to go with her to arizona to run a half marathon with her.  i made my run schedule and i had just enough time to eek out 13 miles before the big day.  i eagerly started training...

...and then i lost my motivation right before thanksgiving.  today is my first day back to running.  which would be no problem, except that the race is two weeks from today.  obviously, i won't be ready.

why do i do this to myself?  why?

it's a new year

i got busy... or maybe lazy... whatever, and stopped updating my blog.  but it's a new year and time to start fresh again.

here i am in my new running jacket from hubby.  i love this color.

i have been thinking about what i want to accomplish in 2013.  a race a month, getting faster, muscles that show and having fun with fitness.  what about you?
